Coverage

An insurer’s yes has its own terms

Give the plan the medicine’s full name and its proposed use. Then ask what you would pay.

Coverage:
the plan’s decision about paying for care or medicine.

Learn the words in the plan’s answer

Look for “formulary,” the plan’s list of medicines, and “prior authorization,” its advance agreement to pay.

Medicare information on drug access

Ask whether the product is on the list, whether prior approval is needed and what documents the plan wants. Get the answer for your own plan.

Medicare and the reason for care

Part D is Medicare’s drug benefit.

Weight loss remains an excluded use under basic Medicare Part D, as checked September 26, 2026.

For another medically accepted condition, the same medicine may qualify for payment under the plan’s list and approval rules.

“Coverable” leaves a question for the plan; it is not a promise to pay.

The temporary Bridge is a separate payment program

The term GLP-1 groups medicines that copy a natural hormone—a body chemical affecting appetite and blood sugar.

The portion of the bill left to you is called a copay.

The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge offers certain medicines to eligible Part D members for a $50 monthly copay, according to the check on September 26, 2026.

July 1, 2026 was the program’s start; December 31, 2027 is its end. You need an eligible Part D plan to join, but the Bridge pays pharmacies separately from your plan’s usual drug payments.

The $50 you pay each month does not bring you closer to your Part D yearly limit on what you pay yourself. Even if you receive Medicare’s help with drug costs because of a low income, your Bridge payment stays the same.

Ask the person prescribing your medicine to request the Bridge’s approval before you expect that price.

Check whether you qualify before expecting that price

The rules checked on September 26, 2026 require you to be at least 18. A separate Medicare drug plan can qualify. So can a Medicare Advantage plan with both coordinated care and drug coverage. Have your plan confirm that it belongs to an accepted type.

The weight test uses a height-and-weight measure called BMI. The program looks at your weight and health at the start of treatment.

For the weight test, 35 or more on the BMI scale is enough without another health condition.

For a BMI from 30 upward, the rules also accept certain health problems. These are heart failure with preserved squeezing strength; blood pressure above 140 on the top reading or 90 on the bottom despite two blood-pressure medicines; or kidney disease graded stage 3a or worse in your medical record.

Starting at a BMI of 27, the accepted conditions include having had a heart attack, having had a stroke, pre-diabetes, or symptoms from poor blood flow in the leg arteries. With pre-diabetes, blood sugar falls between the normal range and the diabetes range.

Having type 2 diabetes excludes you from the Bridge; drug payment for that use belongs with the usual Part D plan. Other health and plan limits apply too.

You need both a prescription and permission from the program in advance. Ask the prescriber to check your plan and health details before applying.
