The screen does not move the patient
As checked September 28, 2026, North Carolina generally requires a state professional license to give online care to a patient who is physically in the state.
Medical Board guidance for patientsFor someone temporarily staying in North Carolina, an occasional follow-up with a medical professional already treating them in another state may be an exception. Occasional advice from an out-of-state professional to a North Carolina professional may also be allowed, when the North Carolina professional remains responsible for the patient.
Ask which exception would apply to your visit; already knowing an out-of-state doctor does not answer that on its own.
An office visit is another route
A face-to-face clinic visit puts the conversation in a room. Licensed telehealth means having the conversation at a distance.
Ask either kind of service who will assess you, who follows up and how to reach that person. Then check the person’s record.
Use the right state record
A physician assistant (PA) is a licensed medical worker who can give care and prescribe under the state’s rules.
A nurse practitioner (NP) is a nurse who can give care and prescribe within a written agreement with a doctor.
The state Medical Board’s free lookup covers doctors and physician assistants; nurse practitioners belong in the Nursing Board’s verification tool.
