Approved medicine

Approval belongs to a particular product

Ask about the medicine and the reason for using it. A familiar name can still leave details to resolve.

Generic name:
the ingredient name, rather than a brand name.

What medicine approval means

FDA, the US medicine agency, reviews a product for a particular use before granting approval.

FDA on what approval covers

Ask for the product name, the form and the use being proposed. Keep all of them together in your notes.

Recognize the ingredient name

The check on September 26, 2026 found approved semaglutide products (Ozempic, Wegovy). It also found approved tirzepatide products (Mounjaro, Zepbound).

Ozempic and Wegovy each include tablet and injection forms.

FDA application records

Semaglutide and tirzepatide are ingredient names, also called generic names. A generic name can appear on a brand’s medicine; it does not mean a separate generic version has approval.

Ask which brand and which form the person treating you means.

An ingredient name is not a generic version

The check on September 26, 2026 found no generic version of semaglutide or tirzepatide approved for US sale. That is a separate question from whether those ingredients appear in approved brands.
